CALLAO – APM TERMINALS (Phase 3)
Following our previous communications and circular messages (back in 2024 & 2025) pertaining to the
Modernization Plan for APM Terminals Callao (APMTC) Phase 3, which is divided into 3-A and 3-B, kindly note:
Phase 3-A (Concluded):
This phase, with an investment in the region of US$ 95/100 million, included the installation of new 12 silos battery
(increasing silos capacity from 25,000K to 85K) new general cargo gates and paving of 2.13 Ha for additional G.C.
storage area.
Two new “continuous ship unloaders” (CSU) were also installed with the purpose to increase the discharge rate from
900 tons/hr to some 1300-1400 mt/hr, which is presently achieved with “free fall grains” (mostly wheat & corn to silos)
Phase 3-B (in progress):
The investment for this specific phase is said to exceed US$500 million and aims to ensure that, by the end
of the same period (by the end of 2028), APM Terminals Callao is capable of handling Megaships (over
20,000 TEUs).
To achieve this, the pier 5-C (presently handling chemical tankers) will stop operations as of June 1st in
order to build a 440-meter container berth capable of accommodating vessels up to 400 meters LOA with a
16-meter draft, equipped with four Super Post-Panamax gantry cranes, 12 electric rubber-tyred gantry
cranes (eRTG), and 33 terminal trucks.
Tankers will continue operating at pier 5-A (priority: container vessels, then tankers), since the present pier
4A-B will also be shut down and demolished concurrently with the works at pier 5.
Preparation for the demolition of pier 4 is to commence also on June 1st, and berth will be granted for
vessels over 10m (up to 10.5/10.6, SWD at high tide) with some restrictions until the end of June, when
pier 4 will be definitively closed for demolition.
Timing for New Terminal Design:
According to APM Terminals Callao sources, the new container facility and the demolition of the Pier would
be completed by 2028, to finalize the entire terminal configuration by 2030.
With this new design, APM Terminals Callao will be able to count on up to 10 berths for general cargo
vessels and 2 world-class container berths, all of them fitted with shore cranes and available depths of up
to 16m.
After Phase 3 is completed, the terminal would be capable of handling some 15 million tonnes of general
cargo and 2.8 million TEUs per year increasing from the present 10 million tonnes of general cargo and 1.3
million TEUs. Meanwhile, some congestions may be experienced at Callao during the remodelation process.
DISCLAIMER : The above information is obtained from different sources and just try to inform our principals some changes of interest that would occur at Callao APM Terminals during next several months and can not be considered in any way as official from terminal operators.
